In honor of the new MLB season getting underway, I wanted to look at historical team and general manager success with respect to payroll. Specifically, which general managers have done more with less over their careers? This visualization gives a tip of the cap to GMs such as Billy Beane and Andrew Friedman. Although neither has won a World Series, they both have guided teams to the playoffs on a consistent basis while working with far less payroll than the league average.
To create the visualization, I scraped web pages from usatoday.com, baseball-reference.com and baseballamerica.com to build the data source.
